Lighting, sockets and comfort: what do you really need?

The most important smart home list starts without product names. It describes what you want to do in each room and how easy that should be.

Plan lighting around use and controls

Distinguish general lighting, task lighting and atmosphere. Where do you want to switch or dim lights? Are the light fitting and dimming technology compatible? Where possible, try colour appearance, glare and low dimming levels with a sample. Colour control and scenes are options; accessible basic controls come first.

Sockets need a furniture plan

Review the home office, kitchen, sofa and bedside with the appliances you actually use. Include cleaning, outdoor areas and seasonal uses. Decide deliberately which outlets stay powered and which are switched. Your contractor checks circuits, loads and protective measures.

Consider shading and room climate together

Establish privacy, solar shading and controls for each window. Discuss how manual intervention, weather conditions and central commands interact. Heating and ventilation functions also need agreed responsibilities and interfaces.

Prepare networking and spare capacity early

Consider permanent workspaces, potential access point locations and room for networking equipment. Discuss useful conduits and spare capacity in the distribution cabinet. Preparation creates options; not every prepared function needs immediate automation.

Comfort should simplify daily life

Define a few understandable scenes, such as “Leaving home” or “Evening”. Describe exactly what each scene does and how residents can intervene. Include visitors, children and possible future mobility changes. Add app controls where they provide a benefit.

Questions to help you decide

  • What is essential, what adds comfort and what is future provision?
  • Do control positions match furniture and walking routes?
  • How are changes approved before installation?
  • Who will check completed functions with you?
